My own space

I decided I needed my own "reading" space. I drug my old wardrobe(painted white) into my little sunporch.  I began looking around the house and outbuilding for things to add. The wooden box is from the factory my husband works at. I painted the front black and covered the sides in vintage magazine pages. The ladder I found in the outbuilding, the side table is a sewing machine table and the stool was found in a trash pile. The chair, I bought it about 25 years ago. I have a place to read and call my own..

Tornado devastation in Kentucky

The sky turned dark and tornado warnings were posted for Kentucky, a funnel cloud appeared over our community but did not touch down. I watched in horror as tornado's touched down in neighboring towns. The destruction was horrific! I was glued to the television as I watched the search the recovery efforts in these small Eastern Kentucky towns. My heart was broken for the families who lost loved ones, their lives forever shattered.
One week after the storms I contacted several horse women and found out exactly what the communities needed. I loaded up my horse trailer and with three of my good friends, headed to the mountains of Eastern Kentucky.
I was not prepared to experience the complete devastation, the loss was unbelievable. Parts of the area were completely leveled.
I watched as children picked through the debris looking for their toys, their shoes, anything. I watched a mother hold a picture of her own mother and cry. I listened to a woman say she knew others were worse off, but yet she stood in the debris of her own home with nothing.
My friends and I searched for two hours just to locate a woman's heirloom jewelry. The smile and tears from finding it will forever stay in my memory.
I met a lady who was caring for horses that were displaced. I dropped off 1,000 pounds of horse feed to her and her neighbors. I met several people helping those without family, here I stopped and supplied water and shoes. I watched a little girl climb into my horse trailer and get a story book to read, she lost her books in the storm.   

The most memorable statement I heard was from a young mother who said, "I have lost my house, my cars, all my processions, but I still have my family, material things means nothing."

Old windows turned into something splendid.

I have several old windows just sitting around gathering dust. I have decided in my spare time I am going to make this very pretty green house. Wish me luck!

Horse hair necklace and bracelet from the owner's horse is one of the most heart felt gifts. This set was made for a woman who's horse was going to have to be put down do to illness. The arrow head was carved by her son.
The horse pin at the bottom is made from Toile paper mache.

almost done

After ripping up the carpet and exposing a terrible looking half pine half oak wood floor I painted it! White to be exact. But I didn't stop there, the mantel turned white also.
The tall concrete light post was drug out of a trash pile and the china dolls in the photo frame were DUG out of the ground. Yes, I said DUG. When my pool was being put in the dolls were found.
I am still working on the room and will post pictures when it is finally done.
Working a full time job is hampering my renovations.

On my travels through the mountain on horse back I meet a lot of different people. These are the many faces of Appalachia. It is a culture of strong willed, hard working and determined individuals. The mountains have been their home for many years.
This woman is a self proclaimed "Healer". She is a God's right hand, so to speak. She lives as if she was still in the 1800's. She has no running water or electricity and is quick to tell you that she "draws nothing from the government". God, she tells me takes care of all her needs and feeds her when she is hungry and warms her when she is cold.

I smell fall

It is that time of year again. The leaves are turning bright colors and the air has that certain chill.

Cabin Cat

This is my Cabin Cat. I have to say he is the best cat to have! I don't ever have to worry that he is not being fed, and he never seems to run in!

Mosier Cabin

Awwww.. I can finally sit back and enjoy the cabin. It has been a long drawn out process, but it is finally finished. I will admit it gets rather cold in the out house during the winter, that will change soon! The bathroom will be installed this winter. I do have electric in the out house, not so scary in the night anymore!
All roads lead to the little cabin in the hollow or if you are from Kentucky, holler. So come on down, sit a spell on my porch.

Let us not forget!

Of the 6,500 Union troops who went into battle, some 4,300 were taken prisoner and more than 1,000 were either killed or wounded.  The Confederates, who were some 6,600 strong, lost only  128 men — 118 who were killed and 10 listed as missing in action.

Summer Time!

This is just one of the many reasons I have not been blogging! Summer time calls out to me and I just have to go! My summer vacation started about 2 weeks ago. I have tried to do everything possible since then! Swimming, horseback riding, caving, you name it..
